ISHGD2015 Newsletter ~ Issue One - 3 June

The 5th International Symposium of Highway Geometric Design (ISHGD2015) is in Vancouver this June. Held every 5 years, the previous ones having been held in Valencia, Spain (2010); Chicago (2005); Mainz, Germany (2000) and Boston (1995), the Symposium attracts many of the world’s top road design engineers. With highly educational workshops, 150 technical presentations, and great technical tours, this Symposium, without a doubt is the world’s leading Transportation Design Symposium – and a great learning and networking opportunity for every local road designer.

With just three weeks to go, we are keenly awaiting your arrival in our beautiful city! Vancouver is a fantastic location for both the Symposium and for sightseeing. From kid friendly activities such as our Science World and the Aquarium (Beluga whales) to taking whale watching day trips, shopping at Granville Island, or simply enjoying the multi-cultural cuisines, there is something for everyone, no matter how much time you have to spare. Be sure to check the ISHGD blog for suggestions!

If you are considering a longer stay, why not check out the rest of our beautiful province or country? We’ve asked a travel agent to assist you with your plans. A few suggested itineraries are posted on the website, but the travel agent can help you personalize your plans.

Q. Are there still spots left in the workshops?
A: Workshops 1 and 5 have proven to be very popular. Currently, there are three seats left in Workshop 1 and five for Workshop 5! Register now to secure your spot. Alternatively, check out the other workshop offerings – there are some great learning opportunities on current highway design and road safety topics

Q: What about the technical tours?
A: The Sea-to-Sky Tour is sold out, but there are still a few openings for the Gateway Project Tour — a great example of a complex urban highway design project. Or if bikeways are of interest to you, then you may want to consider the Bike Roadways of Vancouver Tour. Only eight spots are left on this tour. Vancouver takes pride in its bikeways and this tour will point out some of the challenges the city planners faced during its implementation.

“Did you know that there will be delegates representing over 35 different countries at ISHGD2015? Talk about diversity in culture and experience!”
